Moving without stress : our tips for a well thought-out moving plan

Moving can be a major source of stress. Planning your moving process well will allow you to be more efficient once you arrive on D-day. We have developed a list of tasks to help you in your preparations. Also download our list of service providers and organizations to notify of your change of address.

2 to 3 months before the move

  • Book your movers or moving truck: if you plan to move around July 1st, book as soon as possible!
  • Plan the children’s school transfer
  • Take leave with your employer
  • Sort through your belongings: clothes, books, children’s toys, furniture, etc.
This is the time to organize a garage sale, sell your belongings online via Kijiji or Marketplace or simply give them away!

3 to 4 weeks before the move

  • Invite your friends to help you on the big day. Choose the ones who will be the most likely to bring you precious help: the handyman, the organization aces, and of course, the strongest ones!
  • Make your address changes: (download our list to facilitate your address changes!)
  • Make an inventory of the goods to be moved
  • Start packing some items: the ones you won’t use until moving day! Don’t forget to buy plenty of moving supplies like bubble wrap, moving boxes, and tape.
  • Reserve a babysitter for the children
  • Plan the moving of pets

A few days before the move

  • Finish packing your belongings
  • Gather everything that might be useful on moving day:
    • Tape measure
    • Heavy duty clear tape
    • Multi-point screwdriver
    • Retractable blade knife (exacto)
    • Pliers (vise grip)
    • Hammer
    • Adjustable wrench
    • Tie wrap
    • Gloves
    • Elastic straps with holding hooks
    • Harness or moving straps
    • Broom
    • Vacuum cleaner
    • Cleaning products
    • Rags/sponges
    • Garbage bags
    • Wet wipes
    • First aid kit
    • Toilet paper
The night before the move, gather the essentials to spend the first night in your new home: towels, personal hygiene products, medication, a few cutlery and utensils, a change of clothes

The day before the move

  • Confirm the time and place of the meeting with your friends or family members
  • Prepare a survival kit for the day :
    • Cooler
    • Bottles of water
    • Sandwiches / Snacks
    • Tissues / paper towels
    • Bandages
    • Disposable cutlery and utensils

On moving day

  • Be ready for the movers:
  • Unplug all appliances
  • Make sure the space is clear for traffic
  • Take care of your friends: serve them refreshments throughout the day
  • Thank your friends with a meal and cold drinks at the end of the day.
Take the opportunity to discover a restaurant that offers delivery in your new neighborhood!

Last checks before leaving

  • Turn off the heating
  • Turn off the lights
  • Lock doors and windows
  • Give the keys to the new occupants (don’t forget the shed and mailbox!)
  • Make sure all utilities are turned off: electricity, telephone, gas, cable TV

Make sure to give yourself plenty of time for the move, and choose the right time to move based on your schedule and needs.

Don’t forget to prepare a move budget to cover the moving expenses, including hiring a moving company if necessary. Notify utility companies of your move date and update your credit card information. Consider renting a storage unit if needed. Finally, ensure that you get your security deposit back by following the moving checklist.
